Heuristic is an independent community based learning program for students age 12-18 who are not enrolled in school. It is based on the North Star Model and is an affiliate of the Liberated Learners Network.
For over 20 years in Massachusetts, North Star has coached teenage kids on how to quit school, with remarkable success, and now; Heuristic is bringing the North Star Model to New Hampshire!
Albert Einstein said that his educational experiences as a youth made him "clearly realize how much superior an education based on free action and personal responsibility is to one relying on outward authority.” ~ Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson
"We destroy the love of learning in children, which is so strong when they are small, by encouraging and compelling them to work for petty and contemptible rewards, gold stars, or papers marked 100 and tacked to the wall, or A's on report cards, or honor rolls, or dean's lists, or Phi Beta Kappa keys, in short, for the ignoble satisfaction of feeling that they are better than someone else.” ~ John Holt
"[B]y allowing students more individual freedom for what they want to learn, more opportunities for friendship formation, honest acknowledgement of competence, and increased time devoted to practices conducive to students' physical health, there would be noticeable and enduring improvement in academic and social functioning." ~ Dr. Melissa A. Bray: The Oxford Handbook of School Psychology
